Is Libre Office compatible with your VAT MTD bridging software?
Last Updated 3 years ago
Yes, our application works with any software that can save documents in .xls or .xlsx format. So, you can use Libre Office, Open Office, Apple Numbers, Google Sheets, etc.
However, you need to do it slightly differently in Libre Office. You can't "Insert" our VAT Return sheet into your accounts spreadsheet as you would in Excel, because it will try to be Excel.
To submit your VAT Return using Libre Office, please follow the simple step by step directions below:
- Download the VAT Return form from The Tax Kit App (it should download to “Downloads”). Don’t open it yet. You’ll find it and open it later into Libre Office (see 3.iv below)
- Open your Libre Office Accounts spreadsheet
- At the bottom of your Libre sheet:
- Right click on the tab
- Click on “Insert Sheet”
- Choose “From File”
- Browse to find the VAT Return form from The Tax Kit App in Downloads (check the recently added files)
- Highlight the VAT Return form from The Tax Kit App. Open it in Libre Office (N.B. Don’t double click on the file, as this will cause it to try to open in Microsoft)
- The VAT Return form should then appear in your Libre Office accounts spreadsheet as a separate Tab in your spreadsheet.
- Link the cells in the VAT Return form from the App to the relevant cells on your Accounts spreadsheet
- Save this sheet as an .xls or .xlsx file
- Then the VAT Return should be ready to load back into The Tax Kit App to submit to HMRC:
- Remember where you saved the file to and then close it
- Go to the “My VAT Return” page in The Tax Kit App
- Click “Browse” to find where you saved your VAT Return file
- Then click “View Return” to check you VAT Return
- If happy, click the confirmation statements at the foot of the VAT Return and submit your VAT Return
N.B. Always do a sensibleness check on your VAT Return before you submit it. Is it what you expected?
